Hittin' the Trails!

One of my favorite things to do in this city is explore the great outdoors! I guess that sounds like a strange activity for a city! But we have lots of scenic spots for outdoor pursuits, including the Red Mountain ParkRuffner Mountain, and Oak Mountain State Park. The first two parks take advantage of relics of Birmingham history, turning mining and steel production zones into natural preserves. The area I like best, though, is Jemison Trail.

This trail is easy to get to and offers beautiful scenery. One of the most exciting sights I've seen here was of an owl swooping frighteningly close as a friend and I walked near its nest. I've also found ducklings meandering the trail. (I hope they didn't meet the owl!) Many folks use the trail for their routine exercise, and some faces become familiar. Some faces seen there are already familiar, like that of a local television host. Whether young or old, walker or runner or stroller, many people grace the paths each day. I am thankful to have use of such a beautiful location!
